LensCoat LensPouch Lens Case XXL Short (Ø13.9cm x 21.6cm) Realtree Max5
LensCoat LensPouch Lens Case XXL Short (Ø 13.9 cm x 21.6 cm) Realtree Max5, compact protection for large optics
With the LensCoat LensPouch Lens Case XXL Short in Realtree Max5 you give your long, but not extra-long lenses a really solid home. The dimensions of Ø 13.9 cm x 21.6 cm are made for chunkier lenses with a shorter barrel, such as a Nikon 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR NIKKOR, a Nikon Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S NIKKOR (2022) or a Fuji 200mm f/2 R LM OIS WR XF. And of course also for ball heads or other photo accessories that you don’t want flying around loose in your backpack.
The Realtree Max5 camouflage is not only visually striking, but above all practical outdoors: in wetlands, by lakes, in reeds, or generally in nature, the pouch blends inconspicuously into its surroundings. Especially if you do wildlife or nature photography and don’t want your gear to look like a colorful foreign object, this camouflage pattern is a very pleasant bonus.
Soft neoprene protects against impacts and scratches
The core of the LensCoat LensPouch is the soft yet robust neoprene material. It wraps closely around your lens and absorbs shocks during transport. This reduces the risk of impacts, pressure marks, and those unsightly micro-scratches that otherwise tend to accumulate over time.
The base also contains an integrated hard-foam plate that specifically shields the front element of your lens. Especially when you stack your gear in a backpack or trolley, this reinforced bottom is worth its weight in gold, because the front element doesn’t come into direct contact with hard edges or other equipment. The whole thing acts almost like a small safety net for the most sensitive parts of your optics.
It’s also interesting that the neoprene is not only soft but at the same time stable enough in shape to make packing and unpacking pleasant. So you don’t have to “fiddle around” every time until the lens sits correctly; you can stow it away quickly when things need to move fast, for example when a sudden rain shower starts or you’re changing locations.
Neoprene cover helps against weather, dirt, dust & moisture
The LensPouch is of course not diving gear, but it clearly helps against weather, dirt, dust, and moisture in everyday photographic use. The neoprene acts like an extra layer between the environment and the lens: splashing water, dust clouds on gravel roads, or humid air by the lake are reliably buffered before they even reach your equipment.
This is a real advantage especially when traveling, outdoors, or on longer photo tours. You can transport your lens in a backpack, camera bag, or even in a larger travel bag without every little speck of dust finding an invitation. And if you’re out in drizzle, the lens stays much better shielded in the pouch until you need it again.
Dirt from outside, such as soil, sand, or plant debris, also tends to stick to the pouch rather than your lens. The surface is easy to wipe clean, and if the LensPouch starts to look a bit “used”, that actually means it’s doing its job just right.
Neoprene with insulating function for your lens
Besides pure protection, the neoprene material has another often underestimated property: its insulating function. Temperature changes are somewhat cushioned, which is especially helpful in cold outdoor conditions or when moving from indoors to outdoors (or vice versa). Your lens doesn’t cool down quite as quickly and is somewhat better protected against abrupt climate changes.
This can have a positive effect on the formation of condensation, especially when you step from a warm car into a winter landscape or return from a frosty shoot to a heated room. Of course, the pouch doesn’t replace full climate control, but it is a useful buffer that “slows down” temperature changes for your equipment to some extent.
Thought-out closure system with drawstring
The LensCoat LensPouch XXL Short is closed with a sturdy drawstring. You simply pull it tight, secure the cord with the stopper, and your lens is neatly packed. This is quick, can be done one-handed, and without much fiddling. Especially when you’re in the middle of changing subjects or want to swap lenses spontaneously, such an uncomplicated closure is a real blessing.
To ensure the pouch closes properly, you should add about 2 to 2.5 cm to the actual length of your lens when choosing the size. Only then can the opening be pulled shut cleanly without the cord “straining” over the lens or forcing you to leave the top open. This small allowance ensures that the pouch really protects all around and doesn’t just sit half-heartedly on top.
Practical attachment: belt loop and carabiner
On the side of the LensPouch you’ll find a loop about 2.54 cm wide, which allows you to attach the pouch to belts or carrying systems. This way you have your lens quickly at hand without constantly rummaging in your backpack. Especially on longer assignments where you frequently switch focal lengths, this is a very convenient way to organize your gear.
In addition, a sturdy carabiner hook is integrated. With it you can hang the pouch on backpacks, camera bags, strap systems, or suitable mounting points in the studio. This may seem like a small detail at first, but it makes a noticeable difference in everyday use, especially if you want to adapt your setup flexibly or are out in the field and don’t want to carry everything in your hands.
Space-saving: folds flat when empty
When the LensPouch is empty, you can fold it almost flat. This is practical if you want to take several pouches with you when traveling but don’t always use all of them at the same time. You simply slip the empty cover into a side pocket or suitcase without it taking up any significant space.
Anyone who assembles their gear differently depending on the project will appreciate this flexibility. You can build a small “pool” of LensPouch sizes and only set up the pouches you’re actively using, while the rest remains compactly stored.
XXL Short: specially for wide, shorter telephoto lenses
Within the LensPouch series, the XXL Short with Ø 13.9 cm x 21.6 cm is tailored to chunkier but not extremely long lenses. It complements the other sizes such as X Small (Ø 7.6 x 10.2 cm), Small (Ø 8.1 x 15.2 cm), Small Wide (Ø 10.2 x 12.7 cm), Medium (Ø 8.9 x 20.3 cm), Medium Wide (Ø 11.4 x 16.5 cm), Large (Ø 9.1 x 22.8 cm), Large Wide (Ø 11.4 x 20.3 cm), X Large (Ø 10.1 x 30.5 cm), X Large Wide (Ø 12.7 x 27.9 cm), 2X Large (Ø 13.9 x 31.8 cm) and 3X Large (Ø 15.2 x 33.0 cm).
The XXL Short therefore fills a gap: it offers the same generous diameter as the 2X Large but is significantly shorter. Ideal if you want to store a bulkier telephoto or a larger ball head safely without having unnecessary empty space in the pouch. This way the lens sits more securely, moves around less, and the protective effect is more even overall.
Compatibility with common telephoto lenses
The LensCoat LensPouch Lens Case XXL Short is particularly suitable for high-quality telephoto lenses that are frequently used in nature and sports photography. These include, among others:
- Nikon 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR NIKKOR
- Nikon Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S NIKKOR (2022)
- Fuji 200mm f/2 R LM OIS WR XF
Of course, depending on their design, other lenses with a similar diameter and comparable length will also fit in the pouch. The important thing is that you measure the actual length of your optics and plan for the recommended 2 to 2.5 cm of extra space so that the drawstring can close properly at the top. If you’re unsure, it’s worth taking a quick look at the technical data of your lens and comparing it with the 21.6 cm internal length of this XXL Short version.
Flexible use: not just for lenses
Even though the name “lens case” indicates what it’s primarily intended for, you can easily repurpose the LensPouch XXL Short. Larger ball heads, compact gimbals, flashes, or delicate accessories will also find a well-padded place here.
If you organize your setup in a modular way, you can build a small, well-sorted system in which each part gets its own neoprene cover. This not only makes transport safer but also makes your backpack much easier to keep track of: you simply grab the right pouch instead of rummaging through a chaotic pile of metal and glass.
