The Wimberley Sidekick™ has been developed for the use with large telephoto lenses and a ball head. The Sidekick is attached to the quick-release clamp of your ball head, and a separate quick release plate holds your lens. So, when you are working with smaller and larger lenses at the same time, you don't need to remove the ball head, while still having the comfort of a special, gimbal-type tripod head for heavy lenses. Similar to the Wimberley Head, the axes of rotation run through the center of gravity of the lens, allowing for smooth and effortless panning. At the same time, the Sidekick is smaller, lighter, and quite a bit cheaper than the Wimberley Head.

Requirements on your ball head:

The ball head must be able to hold the weight of your lens without creeping or slipping.
It needs to be equipped with an 38 mm Dovetail style quick-release clamp (available from 38 mm Dovetail, Kirk, Really Right Stuff, Markins, Acra-Tech, Foba, Studioball etc.) NOTE: Most Bogen/Manfrotto ball heads are not compatible.
It must have a panning base with separately adjustable friction.
Attention: A number of 38 mm Dovetail Z-1 Ball Heads (those manufactured between late 2007 and June 15, 2008) have a 2-part stem that can potentially slip or separate, particularly when used with the Wimberley Sidekick.

Requirements on your lens:

The lens needs to have a rotation collar.
It needs to be equipped with an 38 mm Dovetail style lens plate, or replacement foot with dovetail cross-section.

Sidekicks produced after May 2018 have a built-in anodized dovetail plate with a safety stop screw and do not require the AK-100 for Arca-Swiss lever-style clamps or use of safety stop screw feature.
