Kirk TLB-1 QRS leveling unit with quick-release clamp and quick-release plate (small)
Kirk TLB-1 QRS leveling unit with quick-release clamp, for precise panoramas without tripod fiddling
You know this: the horizon tilts ever so slightly, you notice it immediately, and yet you’d actually have to realign the entire tripod from scratch? With the Kirk TLB-1 QRS leveling unit with quick-release clamp and small quick-release plate you can do exactly that in just a few seconds, without having to mess with the tripod legs. Ideal for panoramic photography, architecture, landscape, or whenever you simply need a really clean alignment of your camera.
The leveling unit sits between tripod and tripod head and allows you to set the camera perfectly level, independently of the position of the tripod legs. The result: clean panoramas, reproducible setups, and significantly less frustration during fine-tuning.
Made in the USA, high-quality precision for your tripod setup
The Kirk TLB-1 QRS leveling unit is manufactured in the USA and relies on a robust combination of 6061-T6 aluminum and stainless steel. This choice of materials ensures very high stability while keeping the weight moderate. The surface is anodized in black and satin silver, which not only looks classy but also protects against scratches and corrosion. We’d say this is more a tool for professionals than a toy for casual use.
With a load capacity of around 22 kg, the leveling unit is easily designed for heavy DSLR or mirrorless setups with telephoto lenses, L-brackets, and accessories. So you don’t have to worry whether your system is “too much”; this base is ready for serious photography.
Flexible leveling up to 17°, precise alignment without adjusting tripod legs
The leveling unit offers a tilt angle of 17° in any direction and thus a total tilt range of 32°. That may sound technical at first, but in practice it feels very simple: you roughly position your tripod, fine-tune the camera alignment with the leveling unit, and you’re done. No constant readjusting of the legs, no “a little here, a little there.”
The integrated bubble level helps you with precise alignment. This is especially valuable for panoramic photography, because it gives you a clean axis of rotation and less work later when stitching the images. We’d almost say this is one of those small helpers that make you wonder why you didn’t start using it much earlier.
Compact design, well-thought-out dimensions for everyday use
The Kirk TLB-1 QRS is deliberately kept compact so it doesn’t unnecessarily bulk up your setup. The height is about 8.1 cm, which represents a good compromise between handling and pack size. With a weight of around 425 g, the unit remains pleasantly portable without feeling wobbly.
The maximum width including level is about 11.43 cm. The diameter without level is around 7.24 cm, the base diameter about 7.26 cm. The locking ring has a width of approx. 8.8 cm. These dimensions ensure that the leveling unit sits well on common tripods and integrates cleanly without being overly bulky.
Mounted between tripod and tripod head, quick to set up, quick to adjust
The mounting is intentionally straightforward. You place the leveling unit between your tripod and the tripod head. This way you can align the camera without having to readjust the tripod legs. Especially when working on uneven ground, in rough terrain, or on steps, this is a huge relief.
The tripod mounting hole is designed as 3/8-16. In addition, you have three further screw holes with 1/4-20 at your disposal. This allows the unit to be mounted flexibly on various tripods and systems. The mounting thread for the tripod is also 3/8-16, which corresponds to the common standard in photography.
Quick-release clamp with knurled knob, secure hold, fast operation
The integrated quick-release clamp of the Kirk TLB-1 QRS is designed for fast yet secure operation. A knurled knob on the quick-release clamp allows for sensitive tightening, even with gloves or in cold conditions. You don’t have to fiddle with tools; you can adjust your setup directly.
A locking screw to prevent twisting ensures that the connection remains stable and that the unit does not unintentionally loosen or rotate. This is particularly important when working with heavy lenses or longer exposure times. Stability here is not a “nice to have” but an absolute must.
Small TQR-MPS quick-release plate, perfect for tripod heads up to 57 mm base diameter
The leveling unit includes the TQR-MPS round quick-release plate (small), which is designed for tripod heads with a base diameter of up to 57 mm. This plate forms the compact yet stable connection between your tripod head and the leveling unit.
Here too, 6061-T6 aluminum in combination with stainless steel is used. The surface is anodized satin silver, which provides a durable, discreetly elegant look. The plate is round and therefore particularly suitable if you prefer a clean, centered contact surface.
Well-thought-out dimensions of the quick-release plate, small, light, durable
The TQR-MPS quick-release plate has a diameter of about 5.0 cm and a height of around 1.1 cm. With a weight of approx. 42 g, it barely adds anything to your luggage, yet contributes significantly to the stability of your system.
The plate is supplied with a 3/8" UNC mounting screw, so you can attach it directly to your tripod head. You don’t need to purchase anything extra and can integrate the plate into your existing setup right away.
Anti-twist protection and safety stop screws, for a reliable setup
The TQR-MPS quick-release plate features anti-twist protection. This means it is designed so that it does not simply rotate or loosen under load. Especially for panoramic shots or video recordings where you need smooth pans, this is a real advantage.
In addition, safety stop screws are integrated. These prevent the plate from slipping out of the quick-release clamp if you have not opened it completely. This gives you an extra safety net in case you are in a hurry or working in the dark.
Compatible with common tripod heads, versatile in use
The quick-release plate is compatible with all tripod heads with a 3/8" UNC thread. It is particularly recommended for tripod heads with a base diameter of up to 57 mm. This covers a wide range of typical photo tripods and ball heads.
In combination with the Kirk TLB-1 QRS leveling unit, you get a very flexible, precise system for panoramic photography, landscape, architecture, and all situations in which exact horizontal alignment is crucial. You receive a robust, finely adjustable base that meaningfully upgrades your existing tripod without complicating your workflow.
