Leofoto VR-380 telephoto rail with Sachtler/Manfrotto dovetail profile
Leofoto VR-380 telephoto rail with Sachtler / Manfrotto dovetail profile
Imagine you’re standing with a really long telephoto lens on the sidelines of a sports field or somewhere at dawn in a hide; everything is set up, but the combo of heavy lens and camera is hanging off the mount like a wet sack. This is exactly where the Leofoto VR-380 telephoto rail comes into play: it not only supports your telephoto lens, it also relieves the camera so that the mount is not permanently under tension.
Stable support for long and heavy telephoto lenses
When you work with longer focal lengths that have their own tripod mount, a solid lens support is almost mandatory. The VR-380 takes the lens or lens foot via a 1/4" or 3/8" screw. This lets you securely fix your telephoto lens on the rail so that nothing wobbles or twists as soon as you touch the camera.
At the rear end of the telephoto rail there is an additional adjustable mount with a 1/4" screw. This is screwed into the 1/4" thread of the camera plate or directly into the camera thread. This significantly reduces the tensile load that would normally pull on the camera mount. The combination of front lens attachment and rear camera support ensures that camera and lens act as one unit and behave much more calmly on the tripod.
Direct mounting on Sachtler and Manfrotto video heads
The Leofoto VR-380 is designed to sit directly on the tripod head instead of a separate quick-release plate. You mount the telephoto rail directly on the video head, without detours, without additional adapters, giving you a continuous, stable base for your camera-lens combination.
The VR-380 replaces several common plate types that you might otherwise be using:
- Sachtler Sideload Plate
- Sachtler Touch & Go Plate*
- Gitzo Type C
This allows you to comfortably use heavy camera-telephoto combinations on Sachtler tripod heads such as FSB-6, FSB-8, FSB-10, FSB-6T, FSB-8T or FSB-10T. Manfrotto video heads can also be used, so you don’t have to replace your existing video platform; you simply expand it sensibly with the VR-380.
* For use on Sachtler Touch & Go heads, the included adapter is intended, which you can easily mount and then latch in as usual.
Well-thought-out construction made of black anodised aluminium
The VR-380 is made of aluminium and black anodised. That may sound technical, but it has several advantages: the material is light yet stiff enough to carry even heavy setups reliably. The black anodising protects the surface from scratches and corrosion and ensures that the rail doesn’t immediately look like it fell off a truck, even after many field uses.
With a width of 5.0 cm and a profile length on the underside of 38 cm, the telephoto rail offers enough room to finely balance your combination. Especially with long telephoto lenses, it’s important to position the centre of gravity exactly above the tripod head so that pans are smooth and the head doesn’t constantly tip forward or backward.
The weight of around 445 g is a good compromise: noticeably robust, yet light enough not to add unnecessary bulk in your camera backpack. You can feel that you’re holding something solid without it becoming annoying on a longer tour.
Fine balance and relief for your mount
The combination of front lens mount and rear camera support is particularly practical. Thanks to the adjustable 1/4" mount at the rear end, you can position the camera so that it is optimally supported. This significantly reduces the leverage forces on the mount, especially with very long focal lengths or if you pan frequently.
If you’ve ever seen how a heavy lens with an attached camera bends slightly or how the mount flexes under lateral pressure, you know why this additional support makes sense. With the VR-380, the entire combination rests on the rail instead of the mount alone bearing the load.
Flexible for different setups and applications
Whether you’re filming or photographing wildlife, sports, reportage or calm landscape scenes, wherever long focal lengths are involved, the VR-380 helps you make your setup more stable and controlled. The mounting via 1/4" or 3/8" screws on the lens foot covers common standards, so you don’t have to search for special parts.
It’s on Sachtler and Manfrotto video heads in particular that the telephoto rail plays to its strengths, because it replaces the existing plates and gives you a continuous, long contact surface. This allows you to shift the position of camera and lens on the rail until the centre of gravity is exactly where you want it—slightly forward, a bit back—depending on what your setup looks like.
Robust in everyday use, pleasant to handle
In practice this means: you mount the VR-380 once on your video head and then have a stable base on which you can use different telephoto lenses and cameras. No constant swapping of plates, no fiddling with half-baked adapters. The black anodised surface feels high-quality, is resistant to signs of use and reflects little light, which is quite pleasant in the field, for example in wildlife photography.
The 5.0 cm width ensures that the rail sits firmly and is easy to grip when you need to move the setup. The 38 cm profile length gives you enough room to sensibly balance even longer lenses without running out of rail.
Who the Leofoto VR-380 is particularly interesting for
If you regularly work with heavy telephoto lenses that have their own tripod foot and use them on Sachtler or Manfrotto video heads, the VR-380 is a very useful addition. It helps you increase stability, relieve the camera and make operation more pleasant overall. Especially during longer sessions—such as sports broadcasts, wildlife observation or longer interviews with telephoto optics—you’ll quickly appreciate the calmer way of working.
And if you’ve previously only worked with simple quick-release plates, you’ll probably notice how much more precise a properly balanced combination feels. Less rebound, less readjustment, more control over your framing—this may sound like a small detail, but it makes a clear difference in everyday use.
