We’re talking about the smaller RRS ball head here, combined with the PC-LR-40 panoramic quick-release clamp, exactly the version you like to use for clean panorama shots without the whole thing becoming bulky.

The 30 mm hollow ball moves pleasantly smooth as silk, and you notice that immediately when aligning. The large, grippy main locking knob sits well in the hand and gives you that secure feeling when you lock down a DSLR or mirrorless camera and then still make a tiny adjustment. There is also a 90° portrait opening, allowing you to switch to portrait orientation quickly without having to improvise awkwardly.

The BH-30 PCLR40 is made in the USA, and you can see that not only in the finish but also in the details. It uses 6061-T6 aluminum and stainless steel, materials known from aircraft construction that simply last a long time in everyday use. The result is a robust construction with low weight; the ball head weighs around 0.38 kg while remaining stable and pleasantly compact.

With a height of approx. 8.9 cm and a base diameter of 4.0 cm, the whole unit feels well balanced, not top heavy. The tripod mount is a 3/8 UNC internal thread, so the head fits common tripods without adapter hassle.

Arca-style compatible

The PC-LR-40 is Arca-style compatible (according to the manufacturer) and accepts a 38 mm dovetail. If you already use plates or L-brackets in the ARCA system, this is simply convenient in practice because you don’t have to start with a new quick-release system again.
