Really Right Stuff double-thread mounting stud 1/4" - 3/8" UNC

Really Right Stuff double-thread mounting stud 1/4" to 3/8" UNC for clean, stable connections

Sometimes it’s just a small part that finally makes the setup “complete”. The Really Right Stuff double-thread mounting stud is exactly that kind of helper: a screw-type pin designed for situations where you want to reliably connect camera, head, plate or accessories with different standard threads. Here you get an adapter with 3/8" UNC external thread to 1/4" UNC external thread, so both in a single component, without wobbly in‑between solutions.

The thread setup is consistently geared towards practical use. On one side you have 3/8" UNC (3/8" 16), on the other 1/4" UNC (1/4" 20). This exact combination appears all the time on tripods, ball heads, quick-release bases and many rigs, and yes, sometimes it just doesn’t quite fit. With this double-thread stud you solve that cleanly, without improvising with reducer bushings that tend to rotate along.

Precisely machined from stainless steel, noticeably robust in daily use

Really Right Stuff manufactures the mounting stud precisely from high-quality stainless steel. That may sound matter-of-fact, but in everyday use it’s quite pleasant: the material is hard, corrosion-resistant and remains reliable even when you frequently reconfigure, retighten, loosen again and tighten again. The surface and the fit don’t feel “sort of right”, but really cleanly machined.

The design is custom-machined so you can tighten the stud in a controlled way. For this, there is a receptacle designed to be used with a 5/32" hex key. This makes adjustment noticeably more relaxed, especially if you want to set the stud flush and don’t want to slip around with pliers or a coin. It’s faster, and it also feels less like a makeshift solution.

Specific dimensions and thread lengths so it truly fits your setup

With adapters, what ultimately counts is: does it fit mechanically, without too little thread engagement or anything bottoming out. The double-thread mounting stud has an overall length of 0.73". The 3/8" 16 section is 0.5" long, the 1/4" 20 section has a thread length of 0.23". These are not fantasy numbers, but dimensions you can actually plan with, especially when you’re working with recessed threads, bases or flat mounting surfaces.

The part is made in the USA. That’s not just an indication of origin, but usually also a sign of the manufacturing tolerances you expect from RRS. In short: you screw it in, and it sits. Without that slightly crooked feeling you unfortunately know from cheap threads.

For 1/4" UNC and 3/8" UNC threads when you want to stay flexible

Whether you need to adapt from 3/8" UNC to 1/4" UNC or, conversely, need a connection with both standards in one setup, this stud is made for it. Thread types like 1/4" UNC and 3/8" UNC are everyday standards in photo and video work, and that’s exactly why an adapter 3/8" UNC external thread to 1/4" UNC external thread is such a small but important part to have in your bag. We wouldn’t call it “nice to have”, more like: good to have when it really matters.
