MR JAN GEAR Floating Hide D, a floating hide for eye-level nature photography

With the MR JAN GEAR Floating Hide D, you can change your perspective and photograph waterbirds and other wildlife right at the water’s surface. Specially designed for nature and bird photography, this floating hide combines a stable inflatable platform with a camouflage tent and a low-positioned camera mount. This lets you move in a controlled way through shallow or deeper water and take advantage of exceptionally low shooting positions.

The Floating Hide D is MR JAN GEAR’s third floating hide system and was developed in collaboration with Robert Jensen from the USA. MR JAN GEAR combines Jensen’s patented Floating Hide concept with its own experience in developing practical photographic equipment.

Stable Drop-Stitch platform of the Floating Hide D

At the heart of the MR JAN GEAR Floating Hide D is its newly developed inflatable platform with a Drop-Stitch construction. This design provides excellent shape retention, combining a sturdy working surface with a relatively low weight and compact packed dimensions.

The platform measures 120 × 96 × 7.5 cm and provides a stable base for your camera, telephoto lens and gimbal. Its low profile lets you get your camera especially close to the waterline-ideal for striking wildlife portraits, reflections, and images with a smooth, low foreground and background.

Low camera position with Tallore gimbal mount

The Floating Hide D features a low mounting platform for gimbals and Wimberley heads. The so-called Tallore mounting system securely holds the gimbal and lets you smoothly control heavy telephoto lenses.

This design is a major advantage, especially when photographing waterbirds: you can position your camera right above the water’s surface and follow moving subjects much more easily. This makes it possible to capture perspectives that are difficult to achieve from the shore.

Designed for shallow and deeper water

A key advantage of the Floating Hide D is its versatility in different water depths. In shallow water, you can carefully move the hide into position and work just above the water’s surface. A tow strap is included to make it easier to transport and position the hide in shallow water.

In deeper water, the floating design gives you greater freedom of movement. You can turn the hide and follow birds moving around your position. This is useful not only for photographing waterbirds on the water, but also for tracking birds in flight.

Camouflage tent for discreet photography by the water

The system includes a camouflage tent with two tent poles. It conceals you and much of your photographic equipment, helping your human silhouette appear less conspicuous to wildlife.

Several attachment points also let you add extra camouflage material or straps. This allows you to better match the hide to its surroundings, especially in reed beds, along overgrown banks or among aquatic plants. The camouflage helps you blend in with the natural environment and work quietly from a low position.

Thoughtfully designed handles for moving through the water

MR JAN GEAR designed the Floating Hide D for practical use in the field. A carrying handle is located at the front. You also have two internal handles for controlling and maneuvering the floating hide in the water.

Four attachment points for the tent poles, along with several additional attachment options for camouflage material and straps, allow for a flexible setup. After your photography session, the inflatable system can be packed away compactly.
