Really Right Stuff BH-25 LR: Ultra-light ball head with compact B2-40 LR lever clamp
Really Right Stuff BH-25 LR ball head, ultra-light, compact, amazingly stable
Sometimes one look at the BH-25 LR is enough to realize: it means business. This ultra-light ball head with compact B2-40 LR lever clamp is designed for anyone who wants to travel with as little gear as possible, but is not willing to compromise even a millimeter on stability and handling. Small when packed, surprisingly strong in practice.
The BH-25 LR is especially designed for mirrorless cameras and travel photography. So exactly for those times when you’re standing at the lakeshore early in the morning, your backpack is already full enough, and you still need a precise, reliable tripod solution. No gimmicks, just well-thought-out mechanics that have proven themselves in the field.
Precise 25 mm hollow ball for smooth movements
At its center works a 25 mm hollow ball that responds with remarkable sensitivity for the size of the head. The ball moves smoothly, tightens cleanly, and holds your camera exactly where you want it. Especially with lightweight mirrorless setups, this is a very pleasant combination of mobility and holding power.
The maximum load capacity is 4 kg, which is absolutely sufficient for typical mirrorless combinations with a standard zoom or a light telephoto. So you can mount a somewhat heavier lens now and then without a bad conscience, as long as you stay within this load limit.
Lever clamp with T-shaped control lever
Characteristic of the BH-25 LR is the T-shaped lever with which you lock and unlock both the ball and the base. A solution that seems almost inconspicuous at first glance, but is very pleasant in everyday use because you control the entire unit with a single hand movement.
The lever is spring-loaded and has six different detent positions. This means you can adjust the lever position to your camera, your hand position, or simply your preferences without sacrificing clamping force. This flexibility really comes into its own when things get tight on the tripod or when you’re working with gloves.
Arca-style compatible, quick release with 38 mm dovetail
The compact B2-40 LR lever clamp is Arca-style compatible and, according to the manufacturer, accepts Arca-style compatible 38 mm dovetail plates. The lever principle ensures a quick, clearly defined clamping action without you having to turn a screw. Place the camera on, close the lever, done.
If you already use ARCA-compatible plates or L-brackets, you can simply integrate the BH-25 LR into your existing system without major modifications. For many photographers, this is exactly the point at which a ball head becomes truly practical in everyday use, because everything fits together and camera changes are smooth and fast.
Made in the USA, robust materials for long-term use
The ball head is made from 6061-T6 aluminum, combined with stainless steel components. This choice of materials is not just a nice spec sheet detail, but in practice provides a very robust, corrosion-resistant construction that doesn’t complain even with frequent outdoor use.
The surfaces are neatly finished, the edges pleasantly deburred, and the mechanics feel the way you expect from a tool that is meant to be used for many years. We’d say: more of a long-term companion than a disposable part.
Compact dimensions, ideal for travel photography and minimal setups
With a height of about 6.6 cm and a base diameter of around 3.4 cm, the BH-25 LR remains surprisingly compact. It almost disappears in the profile of small travel tripods and fits easily into narrow compartments in a camera backpack. So you don’t have to think long about whether to take it with you – it just comes along.
The weight is about 0.221 kg. Combined with its 4 kg load capacity, this results in a very pleasant ratio of own weight to payload, which is particularly interesting for mobile photographers. In short: light enough for the backpack, strong enough for serious photography.
Well-designed base with 3/8" UNC internal thread
The base of the ball head has a 3/8" UNC internal thread and is therefore compatible with most common tripods. You simply screw it onto your tripod plate, tighten it, and you’re ready to go. No adapter circus, no experiments.
The base diameter of 3.4 cm provides a stable contact surface on the tripod, which brings a little extra stability to the setup, especially for longer exposure times or in light wind. Not spectacular, but noticeable in the sum of the details.
