Leofoto G2 geared head

Leofoto G2 geared head for precise panoramic photography and architectural shots

Sometimes “rule of thumb” just isn’t enough. When you really want to straighten horizons, keep lines perfectly parallel and stitch panoramas seamlessly, the Leofoto G2 geared head comes into its own. This compact 3-way geared head was developed for photographers who don’t want to compromise when aligning their camera – whether you’re shooting with a DSLR or mirrorless camera, doing landscape, architectural, product, or travel photography.

The G2 combines sensitive, gear-assisted adjustment with a robust yet surprisingly lightweight construction made of black anodized aluminum. This gives you a tool that performs just as well in the studio as it does outside in drizzle on a windy mountain ridge.

Geared head with fine adjustment: plus/minus 10° on two axes

The heart of the Leofoto G2 is its precise gearing mechanism. You can finely adjust the camera by plus/minus 10° on two axes, with such control that even the smallest corrections sit perfectly. No more frantic wobbling back and forth, but calm, repeatable work. Especially in panoramic photography, architectural shots with critical lines, or product photography in the studio, this kind of fine adjustment is worth its weight in gold.

The adjustment is stepless, without fixed detents, so you can position the camera exactly where you want it. If you do need to make a larger change quickly, simply grab the grippy main locking knob, loosen briefly, realign, and lock again. It’s surprisingly quick, almost intuitive once you get used to it.

ARCA compatible, work flexibly with quick-release systems

The Leofoto G2 is ARCA compatible and thus perfectly matched to modern quick-release systems. The included NP-60 tripod plate fits all common Arca-style compatible (according to the manufacturer) 38 mm quick-release clamps and integrates seamlessly into existing setups. This saves you a lot of fiddling in everyday use, because you don’t have to constantly swap plates or look for special solutions.

If you already work with ARCA systems, you can usually continue to use your existing components without any problems. The screw clamp ensures a secure, play-free connection between camera and head – no wobble, no slack, just solid fixation.

Arca-style compatible, dovetail mount for various manufacturers

The G2’s clamp accepts several dovetail profiles: Leofoto dovetail, Arca-style compatible (according to the manufacturer) 38 mm dovetail, Really Right Stuff dovetail, Wimberley dovetail and Kirk dovetail. That may sound like a dry list at first, but for you it mainly means one thing: you’re not tied to a single manufacturer.

This way you can continue to use your existing L-brackets, camera plates or lens plates and integrate the G2 into an existing system without any trouble. Especially if you use multiple cameras or special plates, this compatibility is a real advantage in everyday work.

360° panorama with laser-engraved scale and center mark

On top of the G2 sits a smoothly rotating 360° panorama base. The scale is laser-engraved in 2.5° increments and remains clearly legible over time. This helps when you want to shoot panoramas with even panning steps or repeat specific angles precisely. The laser-engraved center mark with scale additionally makes it easier to align the camera exactly on the optical axis.

In combination with a suitable sensor center mark on the camera, this is almost indispensable for panoramic photography, because it allows clean transitions and fewer problems during later stitching. The built-in bubble level (spirit level) further supports you when leveling, so the horizon doesn’t “drift” unnoticed.

3-way head with compact height and low center of gravity

With a height of only 6.2 cm and a diameter of 60 mm, the Leofoto G2 is impressively low-profile. This keeps the center of gravity low, which significantly reduces vibrations and improves the stability of the entire system. This is particularly noticeable on lightweight travel tripods or in windy conditions: the camera settles more quickly, and you can use longer exposure times without everything immediately blurring.

Despite its compact dimensions, it is a fully fledged 3-way head with separate axes and sensitive control. For many users, this is a very pleasant combination of precision and mobility, especially if you’re on the move a lot and don’t want to lug around half a studio head every time.

Robust construction made of black anodized aluminum

The G2 is CNC-machined from highly durable aircraft-grade aluminum and then black anodized. This finish creates a hard-wearing surface that withstands a lot in everyday use: frequent mounting, cold, moisture, and the occasional bump in your camera bag. At around 360 g, the weight remains pleasantly low, so the head doesn’t become a burden even on longer tours.

The combination of stable material and precise manufacturing means the head remains composed even at its maximum load of up to 20 kg. A 20 kg load capacity is no small matter – it covers not only classic DSLR and mirrorless cameras with standard zooms, but also heavy telephoto lenses or complex studio setups.

Mounting and connections: 3/8 inch photo thread and flexible fastening

On the underside of the Leofoto G2 you’ll find a 3/8" UNC photo thread for a stable connection to a tripod or ball head. The base is designed so that you can either screw the head on in the classic way or, depending on the setup, also bolt it through: from above with a 1/4" UNC countersunk screw or an M6 countersunk screw. This gives you flexibility if you want to integrate the G2 into special rigs, slider systems or other mounts.

The threaded holes are generously dimensioned and designed for a long-lasting, play-free connection. In practice this means: once properly mounted, the head sits securely and doesn’t wobble, even if you frequently change the orientation or load the head with heavy equipment.

Screw clamp for secure camera fixation

The G2’s quick-release clamp works with a reliable screw clamping mechanism. That may seem less spectacular at first glance than exotic quick levers, but in tough use it’s often the more robust solution. You can finely adjust the clamping force, the plate sits securely in the profile, and the risk of accidental opening is significantly reduced.

The clamping profile fits Arca-style compatible (according to the manufacturer) 38 mm quick-release clamps, which gives you additional flexibility when integrating the head into an existing system or working with multiple tripod heads. This keeps your workflow consistent, whether you’re in the studio or out in the field.

Areas of use: from landscape to travel photography

The Leofoto G2 shows its strengths in several disciplines. In landscape photography, the precise fine adjustment helps you keep horizons straight and place foreground elements exactly. In architectural photography, you can control lines and perspectives without constantly jerking the camera around.

For panoramic photography, the combination of 360° scale, center mark, bubble level and gear-assisted fine adjustment is particularly interesting. But you’ll also benefit from repeatable alignment in product photography, for example with product shots. And because the head is relatively light and compact, it’s also well suited to travel photography when you don’t want to sacrifice precise control on the go.

Technical data of the Leofoto G2 geared head at a glance

To help you better assess the features, here are the key specs in words: the tripod head type is a geared head or 3-way head with stepless adjustment and no detents. The maximum load capacity is 20 kg, the weight is about 360 g. The height is 6.2 cm, the diameter about 60 mm, which ensures a low center of gravity.

The material is aluminum, black anodized for a durable surface. The panorama scale runs over 360° in 2.5° increments, complemented by a laser-engraved center mark with scale. The clamp is ARCA compatible and accepts various dovetail profiles, while the screw clamp ensures secure fixation of the camera. On the underside you have a 3/8" UNC photo thread available, and there are additional options for mounting or through-bolting with a 1/4" UNC countersunk screw and an M6 countersunk screw.
