ProMediaGear GT2 Tomahawk - telephoto gimbal extension for ball head & monopod

ProMediaGear GT2 Tomahawk, tele tilt-head extension for ball head and monopod

Imagine you’re standing at the edge of the field, a fast telephoto on your camera, the bird takes off, the player starts to sprint, and your ball head suddenly feels a bit sluggish. This is exactly where the ProMediaGear GT2 Tomahawk comes into play, turning your existing ball head into a precise tele tilt head designed for telephoto, sports, and travel photography.

The GT2 Tomahawk is constructed as a 1-way tilt head and adds a clean, controlled tilting function to your ball head without you having to completely rebuild your setup. You simply use what you already have in your camera bag and upgrade it in a sensible way.

Flexible tele tilt head for ball head and monopod

The GT2 Tomahawk transforms a powerful ball head with a separate panning axis into a fully-fledged tele tilt head in practically no time. If your ball head already offers a high load capacity, you can optimize it specifically for long focal lengths with this tilt unit instead of lugging around an additional heavy gimbal.

What’s exciting is how flexibly the Tomahawk can be mounted. Unlike many other tele tilt adapters, it can be used both in a clamp in the 90-degree position and mounted directly on the upright ball. This allows you to adapt your setup precisely to your working style, whether you prefer to work in a classic top-down configuration or use the tilt unit offset to the side.

Additionally, you can screw the GT2 Tomahawk directly onto the ball head. For this, you have a 1/4" UNC female thread and a 3/8" UNC female thread at your disposal. Alternatively, you can use the integrated 38 mm clamp profiles to mount the Tomahawk in a suitable quick-release clamp with an Arca-style compatible 38 mm dovetail. This ensures a very direct, play-free connection between camera, tele tilt head, and tripod.

Made in the USA, rugged precision for tough everyday photography

The ProMediaGear GT2 Tomahawk is made from 6061-T6 aluminum, a material also used in aircraft construction. You notice this immediately when you pick it up. It feels compact but not delicate, solid but not excessively heavy. With a height of 17.8 cm and a weight of only 0.434 kg, your setup remains pleasantly portable, especially when traveling or during longer assignments in the field.

Despite its comparatively low weight, the GT2 is designed for a maximum load of up to 22 kg. That’s more than enough for modern full-frame cameras with massive telephoto lenses. This allows you to handle heavy combinations with confidence, without the head giving way or sagging unintentionally.

Clean tilting movement thanks to ball-bearing mechanism

The tilting function of the GT2 Tomahawk is play-free, ball-bearing mounted and completely separated from the clamping function. That may sound technical at first, but it makes a noticeable difference in use. You can finely control the tilt without the quick-release clamp’s locking mechanism moving along or loosening.

Especially in telephoto and sports photography, where you often track subjects in the viewfinder for extended periods, this precise, smooth guidance really pays off. You can pan smoothly without the framing shifting with every slightest touch. In practice, this feels significantly more controlled than with many simple pan-tilt heads.

Arca-style compatible quick-release system for maximum flexibility

The coupling of the ProMediaGear GT2 Tomahawk accepts Arca-style compatible 38 mm dovetail profiles and uses a reliable screw clamp. This means you can continue to use a wide range of existing quick-release plates, L-brackets, and lens collars as long as they follow the Arca standard. This way, you integrate the tele tilt head seamlessly into your existing system without having to buy everything new.

The screw clamp gives you very secure and finely adjustable locking. You decide how tightly the camera or lens sits in the mount. Especially with heavy telephoto lenses, this type of clamping is often more confidence-inspiring than fast but sometimes somewhat crude lever mechanisms.

Monopod head and tele tilt head in one

A real bonus: the ProMediaGear GT2 can also be used as a monopod head. When working with a monopod—at the sideline, in the stadium, or during wildlife sessions—you benefit from the same precise tilting function you’re used to from the tripod.

Thanks to the clear 1-way tilt head design, you can tilt the camera vertically while the horizontal movement is handled by the monopod itself. This results in very direct, intuitive control. Many photographers who frequently work with telephoto lenses appreciate exactly this combination of stability and mobility.

Thoughtful details for precise work

For quick alignment, the GT2 Tomahawk features an integrated bubble level. This lets you level your setup quickly, which is particularly helpful for series shots, panoramas, or consistent framing. It’s a small detail, but one that saves time again and again in everyday use.

The combination of Arca-style compatible mount, screw clamp, 1/4" and 3/8" UNC female threads makes the Tomahawk extremely versatile. Whether you’re traveling with a compact travel tripod or working with a massive studio tripod, the GT2 can usually be integrated without any issues.

Ideal for travel, telephoto, and sports photography

In travel photography, every gram counts. The GT2 Tomahawk offers you a professional tilting solution without your luggage exploding. You take your existing ball head with separate panning function, add the Tomahawk, and you have a solution that works both for landscapes and for fast-moving subjects.

In telephoto photography, the high load capacity of up to 22 kg ensures that even long, fast lenses can be handled safely. The smooth, play-free tilting helps you set precise framings cleanly, for example in wildlife, bird photography, or distant landscape details.

In sports photography, you benefit from the combination of a stable base and fast maneuverability. You can track players, vehicles, or animals in motion without constantly having to fight against the weight of your gear. The GT2 takes a large part of this work off your hands by guiding the movement smoothly.
