Really Right Stuff BH-30 LR: compact ball head with B2-40 LR lever clamp
Really Right Stuff BH-30 LR: compact ball head for demanding travel photography
Sometimes you don’t need a huge tripod monster to work cleanly. The Really Right Stuff BH-30 LR is a case in point: small, surprisingly light, but in use much more grown-up than its compact dimensions would suggest. Weighing only 0.318 kg, with a height of around 7.5 cm and a base diameter of 4 cm, it’s a perfect match for lightweight travel tripods and modern mirrorless cameras, without pushing itself into the spotlight.
RRS explicitly recommends the BH-30 LR for the popular Gitzo Traveler tripods, and it plays to its strengths exactly where every gram counts: on tour, in carry-on luggage, on a quick city stroll with a camera, or when you’re sitting somewhere on a lakeshore at dawn waiting for the perfect light. Despite this, the head supports up to 6.8 kg of load, which is easily enough for most mirrorless setups, light telephoto lenses, and macro rigs.
Precise 30 mm hollow ball for smooth movements
At the center is a 30 mm hollow ball that operates with impressive confidence for its size. Movements feel silky smooth but not mushy, more like a well-tuned damping system in a car: you can track with finesse without the camera sagging uncontrollably. This behavior really pays off in macro photography, where you’re making millimeter-level adjustments.
The large, grippy main locking knob sits solidly in your hand and can be operated securely even with cold fingers or thin gloves. Once tightened, the camera stands firm with no give. The 90° position for portrait orientation is cleanly machined, so you can quickly switch between landscape and portrait format without fiddling around.
B2-40 LR lever clamp: fast quick-release clamp for everyday use
On top sits the 40 mm B2-40 LR quick-release clamp with lever lock. This clamp type is for anyone who doesn’t feel like endless screwing: lever open, plate in, lever closed, done. Especially when you’re on the go, maybe in the rain or in a crowded city, this kind of quick-release coupling can be the difference between “ah, I’ll skip that shot” and “sure, I’ll grab it quickly”.
According to the manufacturer, the clamp accepts a 38 mm dovetail that is built to be Arca-style compatible. This means you can use a wide range of L-brackets, plates, and rails without locking yourself into an exotic system. For a flexible setup that can grow with you, this is very practical.
Arca-style compatible for flexible camera setups
Since the BH-30 LR is designed to be Arca-style compatible, you can easily integrate it into existing ARCA ecosystems. Many manufacturers of L-brackets, macro rails, or panorama heads rely on exactly this profile, allowing you to combine your gear modularly instead of buying everything twice. For travel photography, where you want to carry as little as possible but have the right equipment, this compatibility is almost mandatory.
This connection standard really shines with mirrorless cameras that you might equip with a custom-fit L-bracket: camera vertical, camera horizontal, quickly onto the slider or back on the tripod again, without adapter chaos.
Made in the USA: robust materials for long-term use
The BH-30 LR is made from 6061-T6 aluminum and stainless steel—materials you’re more likely to see in aircraft construction than in cheap tripods. You can feel it. The housing feels solid without being bulky, and the stainless steel components ensure durability exactly where it really matters. We’d say: a ball head you don’t replace after two seasons, but rather take with you for years, from trip to trip.
Despite its robust construction, the weight remains pleasantly low at 0.318 kg. For travel photography and longer hikes, this is a very good compromise between stability and portability. In your camera bag the head almost disappears, but on the tripod it cuts a very grown-up figure.
Panorama base with 2.5° scale for clean panning
Beneath the ball sits a separate panorama base with a laser-engraved 2.5° scale. That may sound like a minor detail at first, but in use it’s very helpful: you can perform horizontal pans in a controlled and repeatable way, for example for multi-row shots or when you’re planning series with precisely stepped angles.
The scale is easy to read and, thanks to the laser engraving, doesn’t simply wear off. Especially if you frequently shoot bursts for panoramas or overlapping landscape images, you’ll appreciate this fine graduation. It’s a small feature that ends up being used surprisingly often in everyday shooting.
Ideal for mirrorless, travel photography, and macro photography
The BH-30 LR is clearly tailored to mobile setups. For mirrorless cameras with light to medium lenses, it’s almost a “set and forget” head: screw it on, set it up, done. In travel photography it makes the most of its compact dimensions when you’re carrying the tripod on the outside of your backpack or don’t want to collide with a huge system on the train.
In macro photography you benefit from the sensitive ball movement and the stable clamping. Especially with low-to-the-ground subjects, blossoms, or small details where you’re only making minimal corrections, the combination of small ball, good friction, and secure lever clamp helps enormously. Nothing wobbles, nothing slips away unexpectedly.
Well thought-out connections and compatible threads
On the underside you’ll find a 3/8" UNC internal thread that fits most high-quality tripods. If you’re using a tripod with a 1/4" screw, you can insert a suitable adapter if needed. The 4 cm diameter base harmonizes particularly well with compact travel tripods, without sticking out or looking lost.
Together with the Arca-style compatible quick-release clamp, this results in a very universal system that you can combine with existing plates, rails, or L-brackets. That way you don’t have to start from scratch if you already have ARCA-compatible components in your cabinet.
Refined handling in everyday use
In daily use it becomes clear that the BH-30 LR doesn’t just look good on paper. Operation is intuitive, the knobs are sensibly sized, and the ball moves in a controlled manner. You can quickly switch between completely free movement and a more resistant, finely adjustable setting, depending on whether you want to track dynamically or align very precisely.
The 90° notch for portrait orientation is cleanly milled, so the camera sits securely without wobbling. Combined with the lever clamp, this creates a workflow that feels completely natural after just a few uses. No overthinking, just work.
For photographers who travel light, but not lightly
If you’re often on the road—maybe with a backpack, by train, or by plane—and still don’t want to do without a serious ball head, the Really Right Stuff BH-30 LR fits the bill very well. It’s compact, light, and at the same time stable enough to support more ambitious setups.
Whether it’s a city trip with a mirrorless camera, morning moods in the mountains, or detail-rich macro shots in your home garden, this ball head is more of an unobtrusive partner in the background that simply works. Not a show star, more a reliable colleague you like to have with you because you can depend on it.
