Really Right Stuff TFC-34 Mk2 - carbon tripod of the Ultralight Series 3
Really Right Stuff TFC-34 Mk2, carbon tripod for serious photo projects
You know the situation: the location is perfect, the light is just turning golden, but the tripod starts wobbling as soon as you look at it funny. The Really Right Stuff TFC-34 Mk2 from the Ultralight Series 3 plays in a completely different league. This three-legged carbon tripod is consistently optimized for stability, high load capacity and at the same time an amazingly compact packed size – exactly the combination we recommend for demanding travel, landscape and telephoto photography.
With its fixed tripod shoulder and ultra-rigid carbon legs, the TFC-34 Mk2 confidently supports heavy camera-lens combinations. It is designed for DSLR or mirrorless cameras with large telephoto lenses up to around 800 mm and remains impressively composed. In short: you focus on your subject, not on whether the tripod is about to give up.
Compact dimensions, full height, ideal for travel
Despite its robust construction, the TFC-34 Mk2 is clearly designed for mobility. The transport length is about 55 cm, and the diameter when folded is around 10 cm. It fits easily into many camera backpacks or on the side of a bag without feeling like you’re hauling around half a studio tripod.
Fully extended, the carbon tripod reaches a maximum working height of about 1.486 m. This lets you work at a very comfortable height, even if you’re a bit taller or like to shoot from a slightly elevated position. At the same time, the tripod can be set up extremely low: the minimum working height of about 9 cm opens up ground-level perspectives for macro work, dramatic foregrounds in landscape photography, or creative low-angle shots.
Ultralight yet strong
The weight of only about 1.746 kg is remarkable for a three-legged tripod in this stability class. The TFC-34 Mk2 is a true carbon tripod, using ultra-thin-walled carbon tubes with a large diameter. This patented RRS carbon construction provides excellent stiffness and very good vibration damping at a low overall weight.
The maximum realistic load capacity is around 23 kg, and in practice up to about 30 kg can be supported at full extension. This gives you plenty of reserve to safely carry large telephoto lenses, heavy DSLR bodies, professional mirrorless cameras and a massive ball head. The tripod pairs especially well with the RRS BH-55 ball head, which matches the TFC-34 Mk2 perfectly in terms of stability and handling.
Slender, fixed tripod shoulder for more stability
One feature that immediately stands out on the TFC-34 Mk2 is the slender fixed tripod shoulder. This design deliberately forgoes a center column and instead focuses on maximum rigidity. The advantage is obvious: fewer vibrations, less play, more confidence in your setup, especially for telephoto work with long focal lengths.
The tripod shoulder also integrates several 1/4" UNC threads. These let you attach additional accessories such as smartphone mounts, small ball heads, LED lights or audio recorders. This quickly turns the tripod into a compact base for a complete mobile setup, without having to bolt a construction crane of extra arms and clamps onto your camera body.
Four leg sections with twist locks
Each of the three legs is divided into 4 sections. This gives you two advantages: a short transport length and still a full working height. The twist locks are generously sized and covered with an ergonomic, rubberized ring. This ensures a secure grip even with cold fingers or thin gloves.
About a quarter turn is enough to release the locks. You can grab all the locks on one leg at once and open or close them in a single motion. This saves time, especially when you need to react quickly to changing light. Integrated inserts and O-rings in the locking system help keep dirt and moisture out so the leg locks stay clean and smooth for longer.
Fast retraction thanks to vented legs
A small detail that makes a surprisingly big difference in everyday use: the tripod legs are vented. When you push the sections in, the air inside can escape and no annoying pressure builds up. The result is noticeably faster and smoother retraction of the legs. It may sound unspectacular, but it feels very pleasant in use, especially if you frequently set up and take down the tripod.
Interchangeable feet for a secure stance
The standard feet of the TFC-34 Mk2 have a teardrop shape. This design ensures a secure grip and prevents the carbon legs from touching the ground when spread wide. This is a real plus on uneven terrain or when working close to the ground, as it protects the leg material.
If you often work on soft ground, in rough terrain or in winter, you can optionally replace the standard feet with stainless steel spikes. These anchor the three-legged tripod even more securely in the ground, whether in forest soil, on meadows or in frozen snow.
Flexible mounting stud for different heads
On the tripod platform sits a reversible mounting stud. You can choose between a 1/4" UNC photo thread and a 3/8" UNC thread, depending on which ball head or video head you want to use. Switching between them is quick, so you’re not tied to a specific head.
This means the TFC-34 Mk2 not only fits RRS ball heads like the BH-55 perfectly, but is also compatible with many other high-quality heads on the market. This makes the tripod a long-term base that you can easily continue to use if you change or upgrade your system.
Optimal ratio of load capacity to weight
A key argument for this carbon tripod is the very well-balanced ratio of load capacity to weight. With around 1.746 kg of its own weight and up to about 30 kg load capacity, the TFC-34 Mk2 is significantly more capable than its compact appearance suggests. For trips where you don’t want to compromise on a truly stable tripod, this is a very compelling combination.
This stability really pays off with long focal lengths, long exposures in landscape photography, or night shots. Camera shake is reduced, and you can work much more relaxed in windy conditions or on slightly unstable ground.
Detachable hand strap for more security on the go
A detachable hand strap is included. It provides extra security when carrying the tripod over your shoulder or in your hand. You can also use it for additional stabilization, for example by looping it around your wrist or a backpack strap.
Especially when changing locations quickly while carrying the tripod with the camera mounted, the strap gives you an extra sense of security. And if you prefer to work without a strap, it can be removed easily.
Precise workmanship, thoughtful details
Really Right Stuff is known for very high-quality manufacturing and consistently practice-oriented design. This is evident on the TFC-34 Mk2 in many small things: smoothly running threads, play-free leg sections, solid screw connections and an overall very premium feel.
The combination of patented carbon tubes, robust locks, integrated O-rings and the slender fixed tripod shoulder results in a three-legged tripod that still feels precise even after many uses. It’s not a delicate travel tripod that you handle with kid gloves, but a real work tool for intensive outdoor use.
Made in the USA, precision with a clear origin
The TFC-34 Mk2 is manufactured in the USA. This origin is reflected in the very careful workmanship and the consistent focus on professional requirements. Many components are precisely matched to each other so that the system works as a whole and doesn’t feel like a random mix of parts.
For you, this means a tripod that not only looks impressive on paper, but also works reliably and predictably in the field. Whether on a city trip, in the mountains, on the coast or in your local woodland, you have a stable base you can rely on.
Areas of use: travel, landscape, telephoto
Thanks to the combination of low weight, compact packed size and high load capacity, the TFC-34 Mk2 is particularly suitable for travel photography. It disappears relatively unobtrusively in your luggage, yet is ready for use as soon as you’re standing in front of an exciting scene.
In landscape photography, the high maximum working height and the very low minimum height really come into their own. You can switch flexibly between ground-level perspectives and classic eye-level shots without compromising on stability. For telephoto work with long focal lengths, the stiff carbon construction together with the fixed tripod shoulder is a decisive advantage, as it effectively reduces vibrations.
Scope of delivery and compatibility
The scope of delivery includes the Really Right Stuff TFC-34 Mk2 tripod itself. Other items of equipment that may be visible in product photos, such as ball heads, cameras or additional accessories, are not included and are shown for illustrative purposes only.
Thanks to the reversible mounting stud with 1/4" and 3/8" UNC threads, the tripod is compatible with a wide range of heads and systems. This means you can usually continue using your existing equipment without any problems and integrate the TFC-34 Mk2 seamlessly into your setup.
