Leofoto LH-40GR ball head with G2 panoramic geared head

Leofoto LH-40GR ball head with G2 panoramic geared head for precise image composition

Sometimes “roughly” just isn’t enough. Especially when you’re photographing architecture, landscapes or fine details, you want to have lines, horizons and proportions really well under control. This is exactly where the Leofoto LH-40GR ball head with G2 panoramic geared head plays to its strengths and shows that a tripod head can be more than just a rotatable block of metal.

The LH-40GR is a well thought-out “3-in-1” panoramic geared ball head that combines ball head, geared head and panorama function in one compact system. It is aimed at everyone who doesn’t want to guess at image composition, but adjust it precisely: from demanding architectural photography and carefully executed panoramic photography through to precise macro photography and telephoto work.

Arca-style compatible for flexible quick-release solutions

The integrated quick-release clamp accepts plates with a 38 mm dovetail profile and is Arca-style compatible. This means the LH-40GR fits into virtually any modern setup that uses this system. You can continue to use existing ARCA plates and L-brackets, change cameras quickly and still remain stable on the go. The included NP-60 quick-release plate integrates seamlessly and offers a solid support for mirrorless cameras, DSLRs and even heavier medium format cameras.

The clamp’s screw locking mechanism operates smoothly and securely, without sticking or jerking. This keeps the camera firmly in place, yet allows you to release it quickly when needed. For daily use in reportage or travel photography, this is a very pleasant compromise between speed and security.

Precise geared head for fine adjustments within a range of ±10°

The special feature of the G2 panoramic geared head is the ability to make extremely fine adjustments even after the ball head has been locked. You roughly align the camera with the ball head, lock it using the large, grippy main knob, and can then finely correct in two axes by plus/minus 10 degrees via the gearing. No rush, and without your composition “slipping away” again.

Especially in architectural photography, when vertical lines need to be perfectly straight, or in carefully constructed landscape shots, this sensitive control is worth its weight in gold. It also really comes into its own in macro photography, where a millimetre can decide between sharpness and blur. The adjustment responds in a controlled and even manner, so you can focus on image design instead of fighting the equipment.

720° dual panorama for smooth panning

The LH-40GR offers a 720° dual panorama system: a 360° panorama platform on top and a 360° panorama base at the bottom. This allows you to rotate both the camera level and the base independently of each other. For panoramic photography this is a real advantage, because you can pan cleanly and reproducibly without losing your overall alignment every time.

Laser-engraved 360° scales on the base and panorama platform support you in making repeatable pans. You can remember or note specific angles and return to them precisely later. This is particularly practical when you are planning series for large panoramas, multi-row panoramas or precise repro setups.

Stable ball head with 40 mm ball and 20 kg load capacity

At its core is a solid ball head with a 40 mm ball diameter. The ball is precisely CNC-machined and moves silky smooth, so you can position the camera effortlessly. With a maximum load of up to 20 kg, the LH-40GR is also designed for heavier combinations of camera, telephoto lens and even medium format setups.

The low-profile design helps keep the centre of gravity down. This reduces vibrations and makes the system overall more stable, which is a real plus especially for telephoto work and long exposures. Two generous cutouts allow the ball to be tilted up to 90 degrees and make it easy to switch quickly between landscape and portrait orientation without having to fiddle with the camera for long.

Robust aluminium housing for daily use

Made from high-quality aluminium, the Leofoto LH-40GR weighs around 0.716 kg. This is stable enough to safely support larger loads, yet still pleasantly portable for travel photography or longer reportage assignments. With a height of about 12.8 cm and a base diameter of 57 mm, the head fits common tripod legs and can be easily stowed in a camera backpack.

The 3/8" UNC female thread on the underside makes the ball head compatible with most tripods in the photo and video sector. You simply screw it on, give it a quick tighten and you’re ready to go. No exotic adapters, no special accessories required.

Thought-out operation and clear alignment

The operation of the LH-40GR is designed for practical use. The large main locking knob sits well in the hand and can be gripped securely even with gloves. The lock works reliably and holds the ball firmly in the chosen position. At the same time, the ball’s movement remains smooth as long as it is not fixed, which allows you to perform quick rough alignment.

An integrated bubble level helps you level the base. This is particularly helpful when you want to shoot panoramas or do landscape photography with an accurate horizon. In combination with the scales on the base and panorama platform, you maintain control over your alignment even when the surroundings are anything but level.

Ideal for architecture, landscape, macro and more

The Leofoto LH-40GR feels at home in many genres. In architectural photography you benefit from the precise alignment and fine correction options of the geared head. In landscape photography you can set horizons cleanly and build panoramas in a controlled way. For macro photography, the precise geared control allows you to frame tiny sections exactly without having to start over every time.

It also performs well in reportage and travel photography, because it offers a solid combination of stability and flexibility. The LH-40GR can be used equally well with mirrorless cameras, DSLRs or medium format cameras. Even in telephoto work, the system remains controllable as long as your tripod is sensibly dimensioned.

Separate panorama base for controlled panning

The separate panorama base at the foot of the ball head allows you to perform horizontal pans independently of the ball lock. You can therefore fix the camera at the desired tilt and still rotate it cleanly around the vertical axis. This is especially helpful when you are planning series shots, panoramas or repeatable pans.

Together with the upper panorama platform, this results in a very flexible system that is suitable for both classic panoramic photography and more complex shooting scenarios. The scales help you keep track, even when combining multiple rows or different viewing angles.

Note on the permanently integrated gearing unit

Important to know: the G2 gearing unit is permanently connected to the LH-40 ball head. It cannot be removed and transferred to other heads. The LH-40GR is therefore designed as a complete, closed unit that permanently combines ball head, geared head and panorama system. If you are looking for exactly this kind of compact, specialised tool, it fits this concept perfectly.

Compatibility and use with different camera systems

Whether you are travelling with a lightweight mirrorless camera, using a classic DSLR or working with a medium format system, the LH-40GR is designed for a wide range of cameras. The load capacity of up to 20 kg gives you sufficient reserves even when a heavy telephoto lens or extensive accessories are attached to the camera.

Thanks to the Arca-style compatible quick-release clamp, you can use different plates and L-brackets to position your camera optimally. This is particularly practical for panoramic, telephoto or macro photography, because you can quickly switch the camera from landscape to portrait orientation or move it onto special panorama rails.

Scope of delivery and practical everyday benefit

The scope of delivery includes the Leofoto LH-40GR ball head with integrated G2 panoramic gearing unit as well as the NP-60 quick-release plate. This means you are ready to go right away without having to look for a suitable plate first. In everyday use this means: set up the tripod, mount the head, attach the plate to the camera and get started.

In the studio, out in the mountains or in the middle of the city shooting architecture, you will notice how pleasant it is when a tripod head reacts in a repeatable and controlled way. You don’t have to constantly readjust, but can focus more on subject, light and timing. That is exactly what the LH-40GR is made for.
