Wimberley P-20 universal lens plate (99 mm)

Wimberley P-20 Universal Lens Plate (99 mm), precise base for your telephoto lenses

If you want to use long focal lengths seriously, whether in the stadium, in a hide, or anywhere between the North Sea dike and the Alpine ridge, you need one thing above all: a stable, reliable connection between lens and tripod head. This is exactly where the 99 mm Wimberley P-20 Universal Lens Plate comes in. It is universally usable, cleanly manufactured, and designed to keep your gear steady when it really matters.

The plate is designed as a universal quick-release plate that you attach to a lens foot or lens collar. This ensures your lens sits securely in a matching quick-release clamp while still allowing you to release or reposition it quickly. With its compact dimensions of 9.9 cm in length, 3.8 cm in width, and a height of about 1.016 cm (without stop), it is an excellent fit for many common telephoto and zoom lenses without adding unnecessary bulk.

Arca compatible, flexible in many 38 mm quick-release clamps

The Wimberley P-20 uses a 38 mm dovetail profile that the manufacturer states is Arca-style compatible. This allows it to integrate seamlessly into the widely used Arca system and fit a wide range of 38 mm quick-release clamps. If you are already working with the Arca standard, you don’t have to change anything; you can integrate the plate directly into your existing setup.

The double dovetail profile opens up additional possibilities: you can not only securely clamp the plate itself in a clamp, but also conveniently attach accessories such as flash brackets from Wimberley, Kirk, or Really Right Stuff. For many photographers this is an underrated advantage, especially in wildlife or sports photography, when a flash or additional bracket needs to be mounted quickly and securely.

Specifically, the clamping profile fits ProMediaGear clamps, Really Right Stuff screw and lever clamps, Acratech screw clamps, Markins clamps, Jobu Design clamps, Kirk clamps, as well as the FlexShooter screw cross clamp. In short: if you are using a proper Arca-compatible system, the chances are very good that the P-20 will simply work.

Made in USA, robust materials, clean workmanship

The P-20 lens plate is made from 6061-T6 aluminum, a high-quality aluminum alloy frequently used in aerospace applications. The material is lightweight yet strong enough to safely support even heavy telephoto lenses. Stainless steel components are also used, further increasing durability and effectively counteracting corrosion.

The surface is black anodized. This anodized layer not only provides a discreet, low-reflection appearance—important if, for example, you don’t want to startle animals with shiny metal surfaces—but also offers additional protection for the aluminum against scratches and the elements. The total weight is only about 71 g. This keeps your setup pleasantly light without forcing you to compromise on stability.

Universally usable, suitable for many Canon, Nikon, Sony, Sigma, Tamron, Olympus / OM SYSTEM and more

The Wimberley P-20 is explicitly designed as a universal lens plate. This means it is not tailored to a single lens model but covers a whole range of telephoto and macro lenses. At the same time, its anti-rotation feature provides a stable support that holds reliably even on rounded lens feet.

For Canon EF users, the plate is suitable, among others, for:

  • Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II
  • Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM
  • Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS (older version)
  • Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro
  • Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 Macro
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II
  • Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
  • Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS III

It is also interesting for Nikon F photographers, for example with:

  • Nikon 300mm f/4E AF-S PF ED VR NIKKOR
  • Nikon 70–200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR AF-S NIKKOR (2016)
  • Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S NIKKOR
  • Nikon 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR NIKKOR

For Sony users, the P-20 covers, among others, the following lenses:

  • Sony 70-200mm f/4 G OSS FE [SEL70200G] (2014)
  • Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS FE [SEL100400GM] (2017)
  • Sony 400–800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS FE [SEL400800G]
  • Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM II [SAL70400G2]
  • Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS FE [SEL100400GM]
  • Sony 70-200mm f/4 G OSS FE [SEL70200G]
  • Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM II [SAL70200G2]

If you are shooting with Canon RF or Nikon Z, the P-20 is also an option, for example for:

  • Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM (2019)
  • Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S (2020)
  • Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S NIKKOR (2021)
  • Nikon Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S NIKKOR (2022)

Olympus / OM SYSTEM photographers with telephoto lenses will also find suitable combinations, such as:

  • Olympus 150 mm f/2 ZUIKO DIGITAL ED
  • Olympus 300mm f/4 M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED IS PRO

In addition, there are various Sigma and Tamron telephoto lenses, including:

  • Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM MACRO
  • Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM
  • Tamron 300mm f/2.8 LD SP AF (IF)
  • Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD SP

The plate is therefore universally usable and explicitly labeled as universal by the manufacturer. Nevertheless, it’s worth taking a quick look at your lens foot to ensure that the 99 mm length and the double dovetail profile are a good fit. For some lenses, particularly the Sony FE 400–800mm, an additional Wimberley BS-100 reducer bushing is required to achieve correct, play-free mounting.

Anti-rotation and anti-twist stop, stable fit even on rounded lens feet

A common problem with simple plates: they can rotate on the lens foot, especially if the foot is slightly rounded or if you tilt the camera into portrait orientation. The Wimberley P-20 addresses this issue directly. It has an integrated anti-rotation feature with anti-twist pins at the rear that act as a stop.

As a result, the plate sits firmly and rotation-proof on the lens foot, even when you are working with heavier telephoto lenses or frequently reorienting the combination. The anti-rotation feature is explicitly present and ensures that your setup doesn’t have to be readjusted with every movement. Especially during longer sessions, such as at sporting events or in wildlife photography, this makes the difference between “constantly tweaking” and “mount once and you’re good to go.”

Safety stop screws, extra protection against sliding out

On the underside of the P-20 you will find a total of 4 safety stop screws. These screws act as a safety mechanism and prevent the plate from accidentally sliding out of the quick-release clamp if the clamp is not fully opened. Especially when you are shifting or slightly loosening the camera with mounted lens on the clamp, the screws provide an additional safety net.

The safety stop screws are removable. If you don’t need them for a specific configuration, you can simply unscrew them. In practice, however, most users leave them in place because the added safety is well worth the minimal extra effort when inserting the plate into the clamp.

Double dovetail profile, more than just a simple plate

The double dovetail profile of the Wimberley P-20 is not just a nice detail on the spec sheet but a practical advantage in everyday use. On the one hand, it provides a stable, well-defined clamping surface in your quick-release clamp. On the other hand, it allows hassle-free mounting of accessories such as flash brackets from Wimberley, Kirk, or Really Right Stuff.

For example, you can use a flash bracket on the side without needing an additional rail or adapter plate. For macro or wildlife setups where you want to position light sources flexibly, this is extremely practical. The plate thus becomes a kind of small base platform, not just a simple connecting piece between lens and tripod head.

Practice-oriented details, light, stable, unobtrusive

Weighing around 71 g, the P-20 adds hardly any weight to your overall system. At the same time, thanks to the 6061-T6 aluminum and stainless steel components, it is robust enough to handle larger telephoto lenses with confidence. The black anodized surface is understated, reflects little light, and blends visually well into modern camera setups.

Because of its universal design, you can continue to use the plate even if you change lenses or switch your system from DSLR to mirrorless, as long as the lens foot is compatible. This makes the P-20 a long-term investment, not a disposable part for a single lens.

All in all, with the Wimberley P-20 Universal Lens Plate (99 mm) you get a well-thought-out, Arca-compatible solution that works reliably in many 38 mm quick-release clamps, is equipped with an effective anti-rotation feature, and, thanks to 4 safety stop screws, prevents accidental sliding out of the quick-release clamp. For anyone who wants to mount their telephoto and macro lenses in a stable, secure, and at the same time flexible way, it is a very well-balanced choice.
