Wimberley P-10 universal lens plate (84 mm)
Wimberley P-10 universal lens plate (84 mm) for precise, secure tripod work
If you want to use long telephoto zooms or macro lenses on a tripod in a truly relaxed and stable way, sooner or later you end up with a well-designed lens plate. The Wimberley P-10 universal lens plate with a length of 84 mm is built exactly for this everyday use: compact, surprisingly light and at the same time so stable that it confidently supports even heavy combinations.
The plate is attached directly to the lens foot or tripod collar and ensures that your setup sits neatly and reproducibly in a suitable quick-release clamp. Especially with frequent mounting and dismounting, for example in sports, wildlife or macro photography, this makes a noticeable difference: less fiddling, more time for the subject.
Arca compatible, flexible use in many quick-release clamps
The Wimberley P-10 is ARCA compatible and has a 38 mm dovetail clamping profile in a double dovetail design. This means it fits a wide range of 38 mm quick-release clamps that are, according to the manufacturer, Arca-style compatible. Practical in everyday use: you can use the plate in Wimberley clamps, Really Right Stuff screw clamps, Really Right Stuff lever clamps as well as in Kirk clamps without having to think about adapters every time.
This universal compatibility ensures that the P-10 integrates seamlessly into existing tripod heads and rail systems. Once mounted, the whole thing runs surprisingly straightforward: plate into the clamp, tighten, done. No special accessories, no exotic custom solutions.
Manufactured in a workshop environment, precise workmanship from 6061-T6 aluminum and stainless steel
The Wimberley P-10 universal lens plate is manufactured in a kind of workshop environment where clean edges, exact tolerances and a robust surface are ensured. The material is high-quality 6061-T6 aluminum, complemented by stainless steel components at the relevant points. This creates a combination of low weight and high rigidity that is extremely pleasant in everyday photographic use.
Weighing only about 65 g, with a length of 8.4 cm, a width of 3.8 cm and a height of around 1.016 cm without stop, your setup remains slim and easy to transport. At the same time, the black anodized finish conveys a professional impression and protects the aluminum from scratches and corrosion. The anodized layer is not just cosmetic, but ensures that the plate still looks decent even after many uses in the field.
Made in USA, robust pro solution with a well-thought-out safety concept
The P-10 is developed and produced in the USA, which is noticeable in practice. It does not feel overloaded, but rather like a tool made for daily use. An important detail is the 2 safety stop screws on the underside. These safety stop screws prevent accidental slipping out of the quick-release clamp if the clamp is not fully closed or loosens slightly.
The screws can be removed if necessary, should you have a special application, but under normal circumstances they are a very sensible safeguard. Especially with expensive lenses, this small extra is reassuring; after all, you do not want to find your glass lying in the grass or on asphalt.
Universal use, suitable for many Canon, Nikon, Sony, Sigma, Tamron, Olympus and Fuji lenses
The Wimberley P-10 universal lens plate is deliberately designed to be universal and, according to the manufacturer, is suitable for a whole range of common telephoto and macro lenses. These include, among others:
- Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II
- Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
- Nikon 300mm f/4E AF-S PF ED VR NIKKOR
- Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5–5.6G ED VR AF-S NIKKOR
- Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5–5.6D ED VR AF NIKKOR
- Nikon 200mm f/4 D IF-ED AF MICRO-NIKKOR
- Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 ED AF-D
- Nikon 300mm f/4 AF NIKKOR (1987–2000)
- Nikon 70-180 mm f/4.5-5.6 AF-D Micro NIKKOR (1997–2004)
- Sony 70–200mm f/2.8 GM OSS FE [SEL70200GM] (2016)
- Sony 70–200mm f/2.8 GM OSS FE [SEL70200GM]
- Sigma 180mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM MACRO
- Tamron 200-500mm f/5-6.3 Di LD SP AF
- Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED PRO
- Fuji 50-140 mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR XF
The list is not necessarily complete, but it gives a good idea of the direction the P-10 is aimed at: high-quality telephoto zooms, telephoto primes and macro lenses with tripod collars. Thanks to its universal design, it is suitable for many other lenses with a comparable foot design. Universal really does mean yes here, not just on paper.
Anti-rotation protection and anti-twist stop, stable fit even with rounded lens feet
A frequently underestimated problem with lens plates is rotation on the lens foot. The Wimberley P-10 solves this issue with integrated anti-rotation protection. On the back of the plate there are special anti-twist nubs that brace themselves against the contours of the lens foot and effectively prevent rotation.
This works surprisingly well even with rounded lens feet. The anti-rotation protection or stop is therefore not just a theoretical feature, but is truly helpful in everyday use, because the camera-lens combination remains stably aligned even under lateral forces. This is particularly noticeable during panning, for example with birds in flight or fast sports subjects.
Double dovetail design, more options for accessories such as flash brackets
The P-10 features a double dovetail profile. This double dovetail construction allows you to attach additional accessories such as flash brackets from Wimberley, Kirk or Really Right Stuff directly to the plate. For example, you can mount a tele-flash bracket or another compatible accessory without having to carry an additional rail or adapter plate.
This saves space in your bag and reduces the complexity of your setup. Especially in wildlife or macro photography, where flash is often used, this is a very practical advantage. It is clear that real-world usage scenarios were considered here, not just spec sheets.
Black anodized, unobtrusive look, durable surface
The surface of the Wimberley P-10 is black anodized. This finish provides a matte, low-reflection appearance that does not attract unnecessary attention in the field. At the same time, the anodized layer increases scratch resistance and protects the 6061-T6 aluminum from environmental influences.
Especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors, in the forest, by the water or in the stadium, a hard-wearing surface is more than just a nice extra. The plate remains presentable for longer, and its function is not impaired by minor scratches or impacts.
