What does “Arca-Swiss compatible” actually mean?
…unfortunately not very much.
In this article we will successively test and publish the compatibility of quick-change components from different manufacturers.
Below you'll find a list of which 38 mm dovetail systems work together and in which ways, and which ones don't. This requires two perspectives:
- Which coupling from one manufacturer clamps which plates or angles from other manufacturers.
- Which plate profiles fit which couplings from other manufacturers.
We will provide a corresponding date, as manufacturers can change the specifications of their couplings or plate profiles in the meantime. Tested couplings, angles, or plates are sometimes examples of other similar quick-change components from the same manufacturer.
Couplings (quick-release base):

- Benro 38 mm clamping profiles (tested with Benro PL-85 quick release plate on 04.03.2021)
- Cambo plates QR-7, QR-8 (customer feedback from 13.12.2019)
The plates without safety screws fit perfectly, but the M3 safety screws protrude too far, as they are not sunk as deeply as with RRS or Kirk. In the RRS clamps, the plates then rest on the safety screws, as the cutouts in the clamps are not deep enough. So either use the plates without safety screws or with flatter screws (e.g., M3 slotted screws with flat head instead of the M3 hex screws).
- Gitzo D-profile plates, the plates slip when the clamp is fully closed (tested on 22.03.2016)
- Novoflex clamping profiles, the plates slip when the clamp is fully closed (tested on 22.03.2016)
- Manfrotto Q6 clamping profiles, the plates slip when the clamp is fully closed (tested on 22.03.2016)
- Sirui plates and brackets, the profiles might slip when the clamp is fully closed (tested on 22.03.2016)
Really Right Stuff PC-LR-40 compact panorama clamp with quick release lever
The clamp seems to be less tolerant than other RRS lever clamps; clamping profiles that are slightly wider or taller than those from RRS cannot be clamped (the clamp will not close). Very narrow profiles, like those from Novoflex, have not yet been tested by us.
Depending on the deviation in profile width of Kirk plates, slightly narrower profiles can be clamped well, slightly wider profiles prevent the lever clamp from closing.

How do I find the specific accessories for my camera?
To find the right accessories for your camera, please navigate through the category → Camera Accessories.
Here you can either immediately find your camera model or click on Camera L-Brackets or Camera Plates, depending on what you need. For example, if you are in the L-Brackets category, choose the camera manufacturer, such as Nikon, Sony, Canon, Olympus, and then select your camera model from the appearing selection (please make sure to choose the model with or without battery grip).
If you can't find your camera model, there is no specific accessory available for it. This sometimes happens, especially with older camera models, for which nothing is produced anymore. Alternatively, there is likely a universal plate or an L-bracket available for it.
How do I find the specific accessories for my lens?
Please navigate through the category → Lens Accessories.
Choose from the categories Lens Plates or Lens Replacement Feet, Lens Collars or Lens Protection, depending on what you need. For example, if you are in the Lens Plates category, choose the lens manufacturer, e.g., Nikon, Sony, Canon, Olympus, and then select your lens model from the appearing selection.
If you cannot find your lens model, there won't be specific accessories available for it – but there will surely be alternatives.
