Macro accessories from Wimberley, the Plamp family

Macro accessories from Wimberley, the Plamp Family for precise macro photography

Anyone who seriously engages in macro photography sooner or later stumbles over the same situation: the subject is beautiful, but the light isn’t right, a light breeze tugs at the blossom, and the diffuser is lying somewhere nearby instead of being where it belongs. And meanwhile both hands are already fully occupied with camera, lens, and tripod. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it.

When two hands simply aren’t enough

In practice we very quickly realize that for macro shots we actually need a small team. Align the camera, set focus, control the background, stabilize the subject, shape the light. All at the same time. We know that this doesn’t really work in a relaxed way. You need supports that are reliable, flexible, and as straightforward as possible. This is exactly where the macro accessories from Wimberley, the Plamp Family, come into play.

The idea behind the Wimberley Plamp Family

For years Wimberley has been offering an amazingly simple solution that is extremely helpful in everyday use. The basis is a combination of a strong clamp, a delicate clamp, and a flexible arm that connects the two. This creates a kind of third arm that holds exactly what you can no longer keep in your hand. For example, the well-known Wimberley Plamp PP-200 plant clamp, which has almost established itself as a standard in many macro setups.

Strong clamp, fine clamp, and full control in between

On one side there is a robust clamp that can be securely attached to tripods, tripod legs, tabletops, branches, or other solid structures. On the other side there is a finer, more delicate clamp that is suitable for sensitive subjects such as leaves, blossoms, blades of grass, small backgrounds, or lightweight reflectors. This allows you to gently secure plants without damaging them and place accessories exactly where they will really have an effect.

Flexible arm with modular construction

The connecting flexible arm is a system made up of many interlocking segments. It can be separated, shortened, or extended at any point and thus adapts very precisely to your setup. Components from the company Loc-Line are used here; they are known for their stable yet flexibly adjustable articulated hoses. We think this is one of those solutions that makes you wonder why you didn’t start using it much earlier.

Precise positioning of diffusers and reflectors

In macro photography, light shaping is often the decisive factor between a nice photo and an image that truly stands out. With the Plamp Family you can position diffusers, reflectors, or small flags with precision. Directly in front of the blossom, slightly to the side, just outside the frame. You no longer have to hold them by hand or cobble together improvised constructions that give way at the first gust of wind.

Stabilization in wind and vibration

Especially outdoors, in the field or in the garden, wind is one of the biggest enemies of macro photography. Just a breath is enough to make the subject dance out of the plane of focus. With the Wimberley Plamp Family you can gently secure the subject so that it stays in position even in a light breeze. This is particularly helpful at high magnifications, where even the slightest movement can ruin the image. We would say it’s almost like a small tripod just for your subject.

Versatile in everyday macro use

The Plamp Family is not limited to plants. You can use it to hold small backgrounds, lightweight cardboard with color surfaces, mini reflectors, foils, perches for insects, light shapers for LED lamps, or flash modifiers. In the studio just as much as outdoors. Maybe for you it will simply hold that one leaf out of the way that keeps slipping into the frame. Or it will secure a thin root so you can calmly set the focus.

Easy handling, robust construction

Handling is deliberately kept straightforward. Attach the clamp, position the flexible arm, position the fine clamp, done. Thanks to the modular design, you can adjust the length of the arm so that you can build both very compact and far-reaching setups. The materials used are designed for outdoor use, so moisture, temperature fluctuations, or frequent adjustments are generally not a problem.

Why the Wimberley Plamp Family should hardly be missing from any macro setup

Anyone who regularly photographs in the close-up and macro range knows how much time and energy goes into holding, aligning, and stabilizing subjects and accessories. The Plamp Family takes exactly these tasks off your hands. It expands your options for image composition without unnecessarily complicating your setup. We would say it’s not a spectacular high-tech gadget, but rather a quiet helper working in the background so that you can concentrate on what really matters: your subject and the perfect macro photo.

Twin configuration ground peg with Y-connector - two support arms, double the possibilities

Things get exciting as soon as the Loc-Line Y-connector comes into play. It turns a simple Ground Plamp into a Twin Ground Plamp: two flexible arms that extend from a common base point. That may sound technical at first, but outside it makes a huge difference.

For example, you can use one arm to stabilize the main plant and the second arm to hold a background card, a small reflector or a diffuser. Or you can use both arms to make minimal adjustments to a subject from two sides until the blossom is positioned exactly as you envisioned it. We would say: this is the moment when you realize that this accessory holder is far more than just a “clamp with a hose.”
